Background checks for Hazmat
truckers
The U.S.A. Patriot Act,
mandates background checks for all HAZMAT
truckers.
Background checks for HAZMAT truckers also
include FBI fingerprinting. Under the Patriot
Act, it is essential all drivers report past
felonies including murder, bribery, illegal
substance transport, immigration violations,
unlawful possession of firearms, lack of valid
U.S. citizenship, and identity fraud to their
supervisors and/or employers.
Additional criminal checks by the FBI may be
included in the background checks for HAZMAT
truckers. Every five years it is the truckers
responsibility to renew his/or her HAZMAT
endorsement. Failing to renew endorsements, or
report prior crimes may result in potential
problems.
Every day in the United States, more than three
million truckers transporting approximately
800,000 shipments of various hazardous
materials. In the wake of 9/11, background
checks for HAZMAT trucker should not come as a
surprise. Ground transport of hazardous
materials, including but are not limited to
gasoline, asphalt, cement, ammonia, fertilizer,
propane, oxygen, chlorine all of which can be
prime targets for terrorists. After 9/11, the
Transportation Security Administration (TSA)
began revising and implementing new rules and
regulations governing airport screening, cargo
planes, and shipping containers.
Today trucking companies have to invest time,
money, and effort creating security plans, which
directly address the concerns of their
industries security. Mandatory background checks
on all applicants, as well as current employees
should be implemented. Today in our country
there is no room for error.
